Product Tip of the Month - Prolog®
Upgrading to Prolog 2008 R1
By Brad Anger, Meridian Technical Analyst
Prolog 2008 R1 is the newest Prolog version released by Meridian Systems. This version of Prolog supports SQL Server 2005, Windows Server 2003 R2 and MS Office 2007, along with Suretrak/Primavera P3/P6 compatibility. Additionally, Prolog 2008 R1 was released at the same time as our newest addition to the Prolog family, Prolog Connect.
Whether you are upgrading to Prolog 2008 R1 to access the latest compatibility and enhancements, or so that you can begin using the Prolog Connect product, there is a specific upgrade path to follow to maintain Prolog compatibility. There are 2 portions to the upgrade, the Prolog Application (Prolog Manager and Prolog WebSite), and the database itself. To minimize issues while upgrading, please follow these guidelines to help your upgrade go smoothly.
The full instructions for each upgrade step are found in the Prolog 2008 R1 "Prolog Upgrade Guide" PDF document, on the CD, download or obtained from Meridian Systems Support Services. Prolog versions 7.2 and prior are discontinued products and are not covered here. Please contact Support Services for assistance on upgrading, earlier version of Prolog.
There are 2 ways to upgrade the Prolog Manager application from 7.5 to 2008 R1:
- Upgrade from Prolog 7.5 to Prolog 2007, 2007 R1, 2007 R2, 2008 and 2008 R1 in sequence (Service Packs and Hot Fixes are not required for these intermediate versions, as the newer versions include these changes). This is necessary if you have custom nomenclature in the language files, or if you have custom project templates. Custom templates need to be upgraded at each version of Prolog, which is performed simply by creating a project from the template each time you upgrade to the next version.
- Uninstall the Prolog 7.5 or newer product that you are using and install Prolog 2008 R1. This can save you the multiple upgrade steps if you do not have custom nomenclature or Project Templates.
The database itself can be upgraded directly to Prolog 2008 R1 using the Prolog Manager 2008 R1 Administrator utility to upgrade the Prolog database. SQL 2005 is required, so the database will need to be backed up (BAK file) from SQL 7/2000 and the database will be restored on SQL 2005.
Important note: If you are on Prolog 7.5, and will be upgrading through each version due to a custom template(s) that need to be upgraded, then you must first upgrade Prolog 7.5 to Prolog 2007, then upgrade the database to this version using Prolog Manager 2007 Administrator before migrating to SQL 2005, as Prolog Manager 7.5 is not compatible with SQL 2005.
